A Sustainable Future
Powered By Students

At Unilife, sustainability is built into our design and everyday living. Our energy efficient buildings feature insulation to reduce heat loss, natural ventilation to prevent overheating, and solar panels for renewable energy. But sustainability is a shared effort. Through mindful energy use and waste reduction, our students help us achieve our goals and create a greener future together.

How Can Students
Live Sustainably?

A easy starting point is to turn off lights, appliances and chargers when they are not in use, especially when you are out. Utilise natural light and keep heating to a comfortable but efficient level. Please try to avoid having the heating on with the window open.

Waste and recycling bins are provided in the bin area. Make sure to separate your plastics, papers, metals and glass correctly. Also, you should always try to use water bottles, coffee cups and shopping bags.

You should always consider locally sourced seasonal produce. Hampshire proudly has lots of local fresh farmers markets. You should also consider plant based meals once a week to reduce your carbon footprint.

How can I travel sustainably in the city?

All of our locations are located in the city centre, making it easy to commute on foot or bike. If you need to travel, using public transport or car sharing schemes are also a great way to reduce carbon footprint.

Sustainability
strategy

Unilife is committed to sustainability across all aspects of its operations. In partnership with Stelling Properties, we employ a fabric first approach, ensuring a high performing building envelope that significantly reduces heat loss and energy demand. Our modular construction system reduces environmental impact through optimised material usage, lower emissions, and minimised waste. Additionally, the modular components are designed for disassembly, allowing materials to be reused or recycled at the end of the building’s life, embodying circular economy principles.

Building Design and Fabric

Our buildings are designed to be energy efficient, comfortable, and perfect for student life. We use a high performance building envelope to keep heat in, meaning lower energy use and a more sustainable home.

Our modular design helps reduce heat loss, keeping your studio warm in winter while cutting down on energy waste. Also, the high performance windows and smart ventilation, you will stay cool in summer and cosy in winter, making your bedroom comfortable all year round.

Manufacturing

By using a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach, we cut down on material waste, reduce on site emissions, and streamline construction, making the entire process more efficient and sustainable.

Our partner, Stelling Properties carbon neutral factory offsets emissions from manufacturing, ensuring a greener future for student housing.

Construction

Our modular construction is not just efficient, it is better for communities and the environment. By reducing time on site and speeding up project delivery, we minimise disruptions while lowering our environmental impact.

Through Whole Life Carbon Assessments, we have found that our modular buildings generate 10% fewer emissions compared to traditional construction. That means less waste, lower emissions, and a smarter way to build student homes for the future.

Circular Economy

Sustainability goes beyond building student homes, our modular components are designed for disassembly, meaning they can be repurposed, reused, or recycled if needed.

Even if a building reaches the end of its life (far in the future), its materials will not go to waste. Our smart design allows for controlled dismantling, ensuring components can be reused or recycled, reducing environmental impact and supporting a circular economy.

Utopi
Technology

At Unilife, we’re serious about sustainability—and we know you are too. That’s why some of our studios are fitted with Utopi smart technology, designed to help you live more efficiently while making a positive impact on the planet.

Why Utopi Makes a Difference:

  • Utopi’s intelligent systems optimise energy use, helping you reduce your carbon footprint without even trying.

  • Tracking water usage in real-time, so you can make small changes that make a big difference.

  • Utopi provides insights that help us continually improve, ensuring Unilife stays ahead of the curve when it comes to eco-friendly living.
